If anything can go wrong,
It will.

We are off to the doctors today, the yearly eye test is due. Where we go changes every year, which is a pain as we never know what the access is like or how far mother has too walk.

“Are you fit and able to go for your eye test mother” (thought I would give her the option of saying no)

“It is something I have to go for, so yes. Have you found out where this place is?”

“of course mother, so let’s get your bag packed, letter, purse anything else” I am just wanting to get it over with, this is one thing I really don’t look forward to.

“Are we taking the walker” mother asks. “Because I can manage with the walking stick”

“You walk better with the walker” (please mother change her mind)

“No I can manage with my stick” (oh help this is not good)

Getting mother into the car, meant using the walker down the steps. I was just about to put it in the car when mother said….

“We are not taking that thing, I am using my stick” (now, what do I do)

We find the place we have to go to and park just outside. Mother uses her stick holding on to my arm and we manage to get into the waiting room where she is able to rest for a while.

“That was quite some walk” mother says.

“Hopefully the room will be closer” I commented, thinking, or she would never make it.

We sat and waited mother having a chat to the person next to her, until it was her turn.
Mother really struggled to walk up to the room we had to go too. It was a long corridor with about ten rooms on each side, and yes we were in the last room.

The first part of the eye test involves eye drops being put in the eyes and then mother has to go back and wait for them to work. Meaning she has to walk back down the corridor and wait. then back along the corridor for the final test.

We managed the walk back, just, then mother announced…

“I really can’t manage that walk again”

“I agree with you, I will see if they have a wheelchair”

“What, I don’t need a wheelchair” mother was indignant.

“How else will you manage mother” with that I went to reception and borrowed their wheelchair.

When mother was called she sat in the chair ready and…

“This is hard to push, must be something wrong with the wheels” I commented.

“If you can’t manage I will have to walk”

I had a look and the one tyre was nearly flat, but there was no way I was letting mother walk, she would probably fall over. Instead I gave it a hard shove and kept going.

The rest of the eye test went fine mother sat in the chariot and I pushed. We used the chair until I helped her into the car.

“In future I think we will have to borrow a chair for these trips” I said

“Yes I think so and check the tyres first” mother agreed.

I just laughed.

Till next time
