The end justifies the means.
Maybe she will agree to use her walker more often.

We are of shopping today, mother has done the shopping list and I have checked the cupboards to make sure she hasn’t forgotten anything.

I always think of shopping day as organised chaos. Mother comes to the front door where the walker is ready and waiting, I hold the handbag and of we go. With mother safely in the car the walker put in the boot, we head for the super market.

“Can we go to the clothes shop first, I need some jumpers” asks mother.

“Of course, do you want to use the shops wheelchair?”

“No I don’t, we have my walking stick that will do” (ooops mother didn’t like that)

At the clothes shop, mother walked round for a while looking at the jumpers. I kept fetching similar ones for her to look at, trying to save on the walking.

”It’s no good I can’t walk any more” mother was exhausted “why do they make these shops so big, it’s ridiculous”

Poor mother, she tried but it is a lot of walking.

“Sit on that raised bit over there and have a rest” I suggested.

“Aren’t there any chairs, shops always have seats somewhere”

“Not these days mother, only in the shoe section” it’s true how many shops have chairs for the customers.

“In my day we always had seats for when customers got tired” mothers right.
“Shall I fetch the wheel chair” I suggested.

“No, you got me in one once that is enough”

Mother sat on the raised bit with the clothes display that was on it, I fetched jumpers for her to look at. The decision was made.

“Can you walk over to pay?”

“You will have to do it, I really can’t go any further” mother gave me the money to pay and off I went. With the items purchased I was then faced with getting mother back to the car. The wheel chair was the obvious solution, but that had already been declined.

“Can you make it to the car? If not how about the wheel chair” (please use the chair)

“You are obsessed with getting me into that chair, no, I can walk. Help me up and give me your arm” (why is mother so stubborn, let’s just hope she can make it that far)

Mother struggled, I prayed and we made it to the car.

Needless to say when we got to the supermarket mother was so tired that she sat in the car while I did the shopping.

“Would you like a fish and chips for your lunch, the chippy is open” I decided to pamper her a bit.

“That would be nice, yes but only a small one” mother loves fish and chips.

I sat mother down with her lunch and a cup of tea, while I put the shopping away.

“There are far too many chips here for me, get a plate and you have some”

“No thanks mother, I have a cake that’s plenty. I have never liked chips”

“You don’t eat enough”

I give up.

Till next time
