I float like a
butterfly and sting like a bee. (Muhammad Ali)
Branches pack a
punch as well.
Mothers’ foot improved
by the end of the week so I decided to carry on clearing out the hedge row and
ditch.
“I am going out to
clear some more of the hedge row mother” best to let her know where I am.
“Take your phone with
you, I can’t always see where you are”
“I do wear a bright
coloured top so I can be seen mother” (I do wear a bright yellow top so if I
have to call for help I can say, so and so field look for a yellow object,
that’s me)
“If you have your phone
I can check on you” can’t argue with that.
Down the field I went, I
took one look at the mess in the ditch and nearly turned round.
I could not
walk down the gap between the hedgerow and the stock fence, which is
approximately four feet wide, because of brambles, fallen trees and branches. Oh
well faint heart never won and all that, let’s get started.
I hacked at the
brambles with the hook, getting them down as low to the ground as I could, when
I came to a fallen branch threw it over the fence into the field and so I went
on. The sheep thought it was brilliant, they came over watching and when any
green stuff went over the fence delighted in eating it.
I had just stopped for
a drink when the phone rang,
“Where are you, I have
been watching and now you have vanished” mothers checking up on me.
“Well, I am in the
ditch down the field” can’t resist sarcasm sometimes.
“I know that, your out
of sight and I was wondering if you’re alright that’s all” bless her.
“Can you see where the
sheep are” I ask
“Yes by the fence”
“That’s where I am but
in the ditch, their eating the branches I just threw over” at that point I
looked behind me, the transformation of the ditch was amazing. A lovely clear
path,
“Can you see the ditch
and where I have cleared it so far” I asked mother.
“Yes and I think you
have done enough for today” mothers!
“I will keep going for
a little longer, I just want to clear
this thick bit, see you in a while” with that I ended the call.
The bit I was facing
was really thick, fallen half grown trees all rotten as anything, but
completely blocking my way. I had already cleared the brambles, so I started
pulling at the trunks and throwing those over the fence into the field, all was
going brilliantly until, whack!! A branch hit me straight across the side of my
face. Stars before my eyes, I am not kidding. Progress ceased for a while until
the world stopped spinning, that branch certainly packed a punch.
Never to be defeated I
finished clearing that patch and headed back to the house. Now to avoid mother
seeing the black eye.
“Hi mother I have done
for the day. What have you been up to” (diversion tactics)
“Oh I have done the
washing and tootled around the house and kept going to the window to see if you
were alright, I am worn out now”
Asking mother what she
has been doing is an ace diversion tactic works every time. Mind she kept
looking at me funny, probably trying to work out if I had a bruise or if it was
dirt on my face.
“You need to put your
feet up and rest, it’s getting late so I shall leave you in peace” (with that i got out
quick before she asks)
Till next time
