It is best to be on the safe side,
As it might be easier.

Mother has been finding it increasingly harder to walk round the supermarket with me and on several occasions has refused to leave the house at all. Her walking started to get worse due to her foot hurting and being unable to walk. This I do find worrying, as if I don’t take mother out she never goes anywhere. Infinitely boring for anyone.

Time for some more persuasive talking, I really need to get her using the walker with the seat, round the shops.

“Hi mother are you ready to go shopping today”

“Not really I don’t feel up to it. “Says mother.

I knew this would happen, once again mother will not leave the house, now I need to choose my words carefully to get her out.

“How about coming out for the drive, you can sit in the car and wait while I do the shopping” (good start)

“I don’t know” (that’s not a firm no)

“You often sit in the car talking to your friends” (subtlety)

“Oh ok just to keep you happy” (bingo, part one of my plan)

I got the walker out for mother to use, going down the front door step is much easier for her, then ushered her into the car. I put the walker in as well, which was greeted with,

“What do we need that thing for” (a bit more cajoling needed me thinks)

“It’s in case you feel like coming round the shop, with that thing you can sit down when you’re tired” (heck I needed to duck with the explosion that was greeted with.)

“Are you trying to make a complete fool off me? I will not use that thing round the shop” (mother is not happy)

I put the car into gear fast and got moving heading for the supermarket before she insisted on getting out. As it was mother sat in silence, probably pondering on her next verbal onslaught. Oh well keep going I might win her round yet, or not.

We parked in the carpark and I asked mother if she would like to come in using the walker. Expressing the plus side of being able to sit down when ever and where ever she wanted, as she had her own chair. She thought about it for a while and reluctantly agreed, just to keep me happy. (And I am easily pleased)

So off we went me pushing the trolley mother with the shopping list using the walker. Her friends stopped to chat and admired the walker and loved the seat on it, mother was in her element. I suggested that she sat and chatted while I shopped, which she did.
From a near total melt down to holding a grannies meeting in the middle of a supermarket, with her sitting on her walker. Wonders will never cease.

When I went to fetch her for the paying bit, her friends were full of praise for me and my clever ideas, mother was glowing with happiness and how I stopped myself from laughing I don’t know

On the way back to the car mother declared that more people should use walkers like hers as they are so useful. . Mother!!!

From then on the walker was used for shopping trips, mother was safer walking and regained some of her independence and whenever she saw anyone else struggling with their walking she announce that, they should also have a walker just like hers.

 Job well done I think.

Till next time
