To be told not to do,
Is like a red rag to a bull, for me

Today I am in the garden doing this and that after a mild winter the lawns need cutting and a general tidying up. I have gradually got the garden back into some semblance of neatness, I wouldn’t go so far as to say a beautiful garden, but at least the house looks lived in.

Mother often asks about the garden at my house and I tell her about the plants I am growing and my vegetable plot.

“Don’t think your digging a vegetable plot here” mother suddenly says.

Well, up until that point I hadn’t even thought of it, but know the idea had been put in my head.

”I wouldn’t even contemplate digging up the lawn for a vegetable garden, there are far too many rabbits round here” I said indignantly, but mentally I was planning, plotting where to put a vegetable plot.

Where ever I put a vegetable patch it had to be somewhere that wouldn’t entail digging up grass, ummm, there was that bed of shrubs at the back of the house.

Round the house I went, yes the shrubs had seen better days, they were overgrown and I had cut them back but, that hadn’t helped much. So out they came, the bed was slightly raised, high enough to deter rabbits, so that was going to be the vegetable garden. (No lies told, just fibs.)

I set to and got the lawns cut, then started removing the shrubs. Yes the bed was plenty big enough for a few vegetables. (This is going to be fun)

“What have you been up to today out there “mother asks? ”I heard the lawn mower, I hope you haven’t mown down the flowers in the lawn”
“It’s too early for them yet” I assured her.

“What else have you been up to, you were out there a long time?” (Does mother sound suspicious, or am I being sensitive)

“Just sorting out that bed of shrubs at the back of the house” (it’s true)

“Oh, The one gardener planted those never did like them” mother said.

“Well that’s good because they aren’t there anymore” I grinned.

“What have you done” mother actually looked shocked.

“Dug them up and you just said you didn’t like them so they are gone now” mother couldn’t argue with that.

“What are you going to put there instead?” why does mother always ask questions when I don’t want her to.

“Haven’t made up my mind yet” well I do have to choose which vegetables.

And that seemed to be the end of the discussion. Mother sat down to watch her favourite program on lunch time television and I went home feeling quite pleased with myself.

Till next time
