Spring lambs are so sweet to look at,
Humph!!!
It’s a busy day today
at mothers and today, I want to get away as early as possible. That’s
after the normal hair wash, back scrub and everything else. Plus now I am
cleaning the windows, to be honest that is my own fault, I just got fed up of the
smears the cleaner always left, oh well.
“Are you ready for your
hair to have your washed” I asked mother.
“Yes just give me a
minute and I will be with you” while I waited I started the taps running for
the hot water and put everything ready, knowing mothers in a minute.
She still wasn’t ready
after I had done that, so I rushed out and put the rubbish in the bin and she
was still not ready,
“Mother are you coming”
“Yes, yes, sorry, I was
watching the lambs running round the field, here I am”
Well that was two jobs
done at the same time, back and hair. Now to work quickly though the rest and I
am off.
I got as far as cleaning
the windows and mother said,
“There were a couple of
other things I needed you to do while you are here” oh heck I am never going to
get away early and it’s no good saying anything, as she will only make me feel
guilty. What the heck I will have to turn up late.
I actually finished all
the other bits that mother could find for me to do and sat down to say my
goodbyes I would only be half an hour late at the most.
“Well mother that’s the
lot done anything else you think off I can do next time I am here” I said as a deterrent
for any more, oh can you, sentences.
“Have you checked the sheep’s
water? Before you go” mother had to sneak one in.
“yes” I said standing
up to double check the sheep, when all of a sudden all the lambs set off at a
mad gallop up the field round the paddock and
“One of the lambs has
escaped through the fence and is in the ditch” I exclaimed and started to head
for the back door.
“How has it got out”
shouted mother,
“I don’t know, but I will
have to get it back in” I shouted back in mid-flight.
On with the wellies and
down the paddock I went, where the lamb
had got out there was a rabbit warren the other side of the fence, which must
have collapsed as the lambs ran across and one had slipped down with the soil and
under the fence. How do I get it back? They can run quicker than me.
Ok think. Strategy, one, make the hole bigger
by lifting the fence. A few hard kicks of the fence post loosened it enough to wiggle
it up out the ground a bit.
Two. Get the other side
of the lamb and send it towards the hole. Ha ha easier said than done.
Down the field I went
quite a distance from the fence to try and get the lamb in between me and the hole,
no chance he just kept going further and further away. I stood still, he stood
still, we looked at each other while his mother baaed for him to go back to
her, infinitely wise sheep, who was standing at the hole. The lamb he turned
and went further down the fence away from the hole and its mother.
At this point I made
the decision to run, fast at an angle and head him off, in the wet muddy field in
wellies this was no mean feat, but do it I must to get him back. It’s amazing
how fast you can slither across a field when you have to and yes I just managed
it head him off. I swung my legs over the wire fence and into the ditch,
shooing him back to the hole and his mother. But no it wasn’t going to be that
easy, he wanted to keep going the other way, (they do say sheep are stupid,
this one was!)
Finally I got him close
to the hole so I lent on a fence post and left his mother to do the rest. Bingo
one lamb safely returned to the flock. Now the hole to repair, sledge hammer,
wire, staples and fence posts that should do it. I knocked in a couple of extra
posts to secure the wire to, covering the holes and banged the post in that I had
loosened. I just gave it one more hit to make certain it was in tight and the
head fell off the sledge hammer, typical, well, I thought that can be repaired another day.
Fence repaired I was muddy and tired no chance
of going out now.
Mother was waiting in
the house for an update on proceedings,
“all repaired and the
lamb is back with its mother so all’s well” I announced “but please say to the
cleaner I am very sorry about the mud on the floor inside the back door”
“What do you mean, why
is there mud on the floor” mother was genuinely puzzled.
“Because I have just
been chasing a blooming sheep down a muddy ditch “I retorted.
Mother, she laughed
Till next time
