You can have too much of a good thing
And mother loves strawberries and cherry tomatoes

Mother is having a lot of fun at the moment, the runner beans are producing well. Everyone who comes to the house is offered beans and dispatched to pick their own.

“Those beans you put in are doing ever so well, everyone comments an how lovely they are and we are getting quite a lot” I gave mother six plants to look after but planted twenty, mother still thinks it’s only the six.

“And you didn’t want a vegetable garden” just couldn’t resist that comment.

“Did you plant anything else” is that a trick question or genuine interest.

“Yes I put in carrots and courgettes, just to fill the patch up” wait for it……

“Lovely can you leave a fork out so they can be dug up as well” what happened to the, I told you no vegetable patch. I really feel cheated now

“Would you like some tomatoes, I put some in pots and there ready”

“Oh yes please I love fresh tomatoes” mother eyes lit up.

To be honest I knew mother loved fresh tomatoes and runner beans, so there was a good chance that the vegetable garden would be accepted, I just had great fun defying her.

Mother really enjoyed the tomatoes, also strawberries came into season, she was in her element. Until…….

“My foot is really painful again” oh no here we go

“This time you go to the doctors” I am trying to be assertive.

“No it went away the last time” mother is so frustrating.

“Alright let’s think about what can be causing it, what are you doing that’s different” and we start on a process of elimination.

 Walking more, no

Standing more, no.

Knocking it somewhere, no.

“How about the amount of tomatoes and strawberries you’re eating, it could be gout again” mother looked horrified.

“Don’t be silly I always eat loads of fruit”

“Yes but not strawberries and the tomatoes you’re eating like sweets, I bet its gout” this suggestion was not appreciated.

We went to the see the nurse a few days after this and while we were there I mentioned the foot. Mother glared at me but I ignored it. The nurse looked and arranged for the doctor to see, the foot. To say mother was not happy is an understatement.

In to the doctor we went mother sat on her walkers’ seat, as it is easier to get up from,

“It’s gout” was the verdict from the doctor.

“It can’t be” was mothers opinion.

“We will do blood tests to prove it” was the doctor’s answer. “And here’s a prescription”

“Thanks doctor, how can we prevent it in the future” was my input.

“When the pain has gone we can start on the preventative tablets “was the reply.

Mother Started to say that we were taking up too much off their time, so I quickly pushed her, still sat on the walker, back to the nurse, who was waiting by her door for us.

“I could have walked” mother protested.

“Yes, but you did say we were taking up a lot of their time, so this was quicker” the nurse laughed and mother scowled, but she had seen the doctor.

Till next time
