Necessity is the mother of invention
Where mother is concerned I am very creative.
Mother’s foot is painful again, and yes mother
refuses to go to the doctors.
“I will not take those tablets again, did you
see the side effects to them. There was a long list” (there goes rational
thinking.)
“Did you have any side effects” (go on find
just one.)
“There were that many listed on the packet I
didn’t know if I did or not” (mother!)
“I can assure you that the only side effect you
have had, is your foot being less painful, you need some more tablets to get
rid of the pain totally” now that is assertion at its best.
“No” was all I got from mother.
Off I went into the garden. I could really do
with chopping something down, but had to make do with mowing the lawns. I had a
good think about the problem of mother and the foot, would the doctor prescribe
more tablets if I went and asked him or did it have to come from mother. Could
be worth trying, what would be the consequences, mother ………………………
Blow it I will give it a try, if I get the
tablets she needs and I can persuade her to take them we both win, mother will
be out of pain and not so grumpy.
As soon as I had finished the lawns off to the
doctors I went. The receptionists agreed to give the doctor a message about mothers’
foot and I forgot to mention that she was unaware of what I was asking for. I
phoned the doctors a few hours later and yes I had a prescription to pick up.
Now the
hard bit.
The next day I took the tablets into mother and
giving them to her said what I had done.
“I said I would not take anymore because of the
side effects” mother can be stubborn, I am worse.
“You never had any side effects from the
others, but your foot got less painful, take these and you should be out of
pain. Then you can have the preventative tablets” makes sense to me.
Mother glared “I know what your saying is
right, but…”
I interrupted her with “do you want to get rid
of the pain”
“Yes but…” mother tried to protest.
In I jumped again with “then take the tablets” mother
took the tablets and a few days later was out of pain. Phew that was one battle
of wills. The next thing was how I get her to take the preventative tablets.
“Mother now your foots better you can have the
tablets to stop you getting gout” (please say yes)
No chance “I do not want any more tablets I
take enough” here we go.
“It’s up to you mother, you either have a
painful foot, in silence, or you take the tablets” me being straight to the
point “or I can go to the doctors again”
Mother looked at me, yes looked not glared
looked, then said..
“I will phone the doctor tomorrow”, (I did
resist doing I dance of triumph)
Mother phoned and the doctor gave her the
tablets to prevent gout. There has not been a recurrence of, the sore foot
since.
Eureka!!!
Till
next time
