To enable independence is hard when mother resists.

Mothers foot maybe better but the problem she had has taken its toll. Before the gout episodes she was able to walk quite well, but now she struggles to go any distance at all. I have suggested we get a wheel chair for her to use, just so she can get out the house, but no that was dismissed.

“Are you coming shopping today, you can sit in the car and watch the world go buy” I say to mother hopefully.

“Yes I think I will, take my walker as I need to go to the bank” mother replied.

I just agreed and thought to myself how on earth is she going to walk to the bank and back to the car.

Mother struggled to get to out the house and into the car, puffing and panting as if she had run a marathon. I put the walker in the car and off we went. All the way to the bank mother sat in silence not a word was spoken, even when I pointed things out to her I just received a, oh yes. As we approached the bank mother asked me to pull up outside the disability shop, which I did, then mother said,

“Can you go inside and buy me a wheelchair, I think I need one to go shopping and the bank”

You could have knocked me down with a feather, I just agreed and popped into the shop.one wheelchair was purchased and I went back to the car.

“Here we are mother, the bank is only up the road you might as well get in the chair now and I can push you there” (get her in it quick, they don’t take back used goods.)

In mother got and off we set, the only problem was I forgot that I had to push her up a slight hill.

”ouch that was a bump mind where you’re going” declares mother

So I start dodging all the bumps.

“Will you go in a straight line I’m getting sea sick” mother says

“I am missing all the bumps” I say a bit breathlessly

“I am far too heavy for you to push” mother states (she is up a hill but I will not say so)
“We are at the bank now hold on while I get you through the door” try as I might I could not get the chair over the slight bump in the door way. I stood on the treads at the back and pushed, no her weight defeated me. Then along came a knight in shinny armour, good looking one as well.

“Let me hep you” my knight said smiling. (Ohhhhh week knees)

He promptly bent over and pulled the chair from the front frame and over the slight bump we went. Well I couldn’t thank him enough and of he went smiling.

“Trust you to get a good looking bloke to help” was mother comment.

“I’ve still got it then mother” I replied and laughed. Mother grunted.

Mother conducted her business at the counter and on the way out an older gentleman held the door open for us.

“Huh me falling over their selves to help you today” mother grumbled.

“No mother that one was defiantly after you, I saw the way he smiled at you” I grinned.

Mother didn’t say a word but she defiantly sat straighter in the chair.

At least using the chair mother regained some of her independence.

Till next time
