Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
But will mother agree.
As mother has taken to
using the walker in public now, when she asked me to buy her some more
t-shirts, I suggested using the walker and choosing her own. That suggestion
was met with some trepidation, which I suppose was understandable, as it would
involve some walking.
“How about we go to the
bank this week see how I manage and the shops next time” says mother looking
hopeful.
“Alright, if that’s
what you want to do its fine by me”
So off we went to the
shops. I drive now that mother has finally given up (people are safe at last)
but now I have a front seat driver.
“Stop I have forgotten
my glasses” shouts mother just as I am turning round.
“How can I watch the roads without them” states
mother.
“You don’t need to, I
am driving”
“Yes but I am helping”
(is blind folding her legal or classed as abuse) Instead I go back into the
house and get the glasses.
“Alright you can go
now” (thanks mother)
That’s only the
beginning, in the drive I had watch the wall, mind the garage and...
“Whoa” (heck now mother
thinks in a horse)
“What’s the, whoa for”
I ask.
“The main road, you can’t
just drive across” (can I use a gag as well)
“Mother I was already
stopped”
“Just making sure.
There are cars my way. Wait there are some your way. Ok you can go now” I stay
put.
“Why didn’t you go it
was clear, we will have to wait again now” mother says.
“Who is driving mother,
me or you?”
“You are, I am helping”
I glared at her.
“Then let me drive” I
say firmly.
That kept her quiet
until I was across the road.
“You’re going to fast”
mothers off again, I’m doing forty miles an hour.
“Slow down for the
roundabout”
“Mother my foots
already on the brake”
“I have to tell you in
case you forget, go this way for the bank, and watch those children” (the children are on the path.)
By the time we get to
the bank I am starting to think taking over the driving was a bad idea. I park
the car and get her walker out and put it by the open passenger door ready for
her...
“Did you have to park
by the kerb? It is harder to get out” mother groans.
“I could park the other
way round, but then you would have to get out with cars coming past”
We stood in the queue,
at the bank and walked to the post office, mother was shattered.
“Here you go mother sit
down on this bench and rest, I’ll pop over the road and fetch some cakes” how
to make someone happy, cake.
Mother sat watching the world go by, when I
went back she was in conversation with another women, putting the world to
rights. Which gave me the chance to gather my wits ready for the drive home.
Mother was happy on the
way back chatting about this women and her problems and how she had enjoyed the
trip out. It was decided that going round a clothes shop was possible with the
walker, so long as mother didn’t stand for too long.
Till next time
